Overview

The useful trick this tool performs is direct editing. Most image utilities extract an image, let you change the extracted files and then rebuild it from scratch, which for a several gigabyte image is a slow round trip. Here the image is opened and modified in place, files added, removed and renamed inside it, and only the changed portion is written back.

Format handling is broad, covering the standard image format and the long list of proprietary ones that older burning suites produced, along with the archive formats often used to distribute an image. Anything that opens can be converted into anything else, so a set of images in three different proprietary formats becomes a consistent set of standard ones in a single batch.

Making bootable media is the other main use. An image can be written to a USB stick with the boot record handled correctly for both the older and newer firmware paths, boot information can be extracted from existing media, and a bootable image can be built from a folder of files with the boot sector supplied separately. For anyone who keeps a drawer of installation sticks, this is the tool that fills them.

The remaining pieces cover the everyday cases: creating an image from a physical disc or from a folder on disk, mounting an image as a virtual drive so its contents are available without writing anything, verifying an image against a checksum, extracting selected files without a full unpack, and optimising an image by removing the duplicate content that accumulates in a rebuilt one.

Installation Notes

• Pick the correct write mode for the target firmware, a stick written for the wrong boot path simply will not appear in the boot menu.
• Keep a spare copy of any image you edit in place, an interrupted write leaves the file inconsistent.
• Verify a written stick before wiping the machine you intend to install on, discovering a bad write afterwards is a slow lesson.
