Overview
VLC solved a problem that used to eat entire afternoons. Before it existed, playing an unfamiliar file meant identifying the codec, finding a pack that carried it, installing that pack, and then dealing with whatever it broke elsewhere in the system. VLC carries its own decoders internally, registers nothing system wide, and plays the file. Two decades later that is still the whole pitch, and it is still the reason it is the first application installed on a fresh machine.
Format coverage is close to absolute. Every common container and codec is handled, along with a long tail of obsolete, regional and broken ones. Partial downloads play. Files with damaged indexes play, with the player rebuilding what it needs on the fly. Disc images and folder structures mount and play directly without being burned or extracted. Network streams, capture devices and screen sources all open through the same media dialog.
The playback surface has more depth than the plain window suggests. There is a full audio and video filter chain with a ten band equaliser, compressor, spatialiser and normaliser on the audio side, and deinterlacing, cropping, aspect correction, sharpening and colour adjustment on the video side. Subtitles load automatically from matching files or from inside the container, with delay adjustment on a keystroke for the frequent case where they drift out of sync.
Beyond playing things, it converts and streams them. The convert dialog remuxes or transcodes to another container and codec, extracts an audio track from a video, or writes a stream to disk. The streaming side broadcasts a file or a live capture over the network to other machines, which is a feature most people never touch and the remainder rely on entirely. There is also a full playlist manager, a web interface for remote control, and an extension system for subtitle fetching and metadata.

Installation Notes
- Turn hardware decoding on for 4K and high bitrate files, and turn it off if you see tearing or colour artefacts on a specific clip.
- Set it as the default handler for the formats you care about during setup rather than fighting the system prompt afterwards.
- If subtitles drift, adjust the delay with the keyboard shortcut during playback instead of editing the subtitle file.
Before You Start
Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
