Overview
VueScan exists because scanner manufacturers abandon drivers. A perfectly good flatbed or film scanner becomes a paperweight when the vendor stops shipping software for the current operating system, and VueScan solves that by carrying its own drivers for several thousand models rather than depending on whatever the manufacturer still publishes. Plug in a fifteen year old scanner and it works.
The scanning surface covers the full range of source material. Reflective documents and photographs, transparencies, negatives and slides, with film specific handling that includes per stock colour profiles, base colour compensation for the orange mask on colour negatives, and multi pass scanning that samples the same frame several times to lift shadow detail out of dense film.
The Professional edition adds the tools that matter for archival work: raw scan files that store the sensor data before any processing so a scan can be reprocessed years later without touching the original, infrared cleaning on scanners with the hardware for it to remove dust and scratches without softening grain, batch scanning with automatic file naming, and colour calibration against IT8 targets for genuinely accurate reproduction.
Output covers everything an archive or an office needs. TIFF at full bit depth for masters, JPEG for distribution, PDF with OCR for searchable document archives, multi page documents assembled from an automatic feeder, and profile embedding so the colour intent travels with the file. The interface can be collapsed to a handful of controls for routine scanning or opened fully for the advanced options.

Installation Notes
- Uninstall the manufacturer software first if it grabs the device exclusively, otherwise the scanner may not appear in the device list.
- Save raw scan files for anything you care about. Reprocessing later is free, rescanning is not.
- Warm the lamp on older CCD scanners for a few minutes before a colour critical batch, early scans drift otherwise.
Before You Start
Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.
If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.
Frequently Asked
Very likely. The driver list covers several thousand models including a great many the manufacturer stopped supporting long ago.
Raw scan files, infrared cleaning, IT8 calibration, multi pass scanning and the full batch automation set.
No. VueScan talks to the hardware directly, and in many cases the vendor software is the thing causing the conflict.
