Overview
Windows 7 Professional is still the operating system on a surprising number of machines that have a job to do and no reason to change. Machine controllers, laboratory instruments, till systems, audio workstations with old interface drivers and design machines with expensive perpetual software all sit in that category, and for them a newer platform is not an upgrade, it is a compatibility problem.

The interface is the one that a whole generation learned on. Aero with live previews, the taskbar with jump lists and pinning, libraries in the file browser, gadgets on the desktop, and a start menu with a search box that finds programs rather than searching the internet first. Resource use is modest by modern standards, so a machine with 4 GB of memory and a mechanical disk behaves acceptably rather than swapping constantly.

Installation Notes
- Back up anything on the target disk before starting. A clean install removes the contents of the partition it writes to.
- Write the image to a USB stick with a tool that handles the boot sector correctly, or burn it to a disc for very old machines that will not boot from USB.
- Have your chipset, storage and network drivers on the same stick. A fresh install on newer hardware often comes up without networking until they are applied.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
