Overview

This is the bootable environment that has quietly become a standard on service benches, and the reason is coverage. It boots into a working preinstallation desktop rather than a menu, which means the tools run in a familiar interface with a taskbar, a file manager, network access and the ability to open two things at once, and the tool list is comprehensive enough that most jobs never need a second stick.

Boot support covers three platform generations and both firmware modes, so it starts on an ancient legacy machine and on a current UEFI laptop alike. Storage controller drivers are integrated broadly, which is the usual failure point of a home built recovery stick, and network drivers are included so a rescued set of files can go straight to a share rather than being juggled onto external drives.

The disk toolkit is deep. Several partition editors rather than one, sector level imaging and restore, disk cloning for migrations onto a new solid state drive, boot record and boot configuration repair, virtual disk mounting, secure erase, surface scanning and drive health reporting. When a machine will not start after a failed update or a partition table has been damaged, this is the section that fixes it.

Installation Notes

• Write the image with a tool that handles the boot sector correctly rather than copying files onto the stick.
• Disable secure boot in firmware if the stick is rejected at startup, and turn it back on when the machine is repaired.
• Recover files onto a second drive, never back onto the partition you are recovering from.
