Overview

Mathematica's distinguishing property is that it works symbolically first. An integral is solved as an expression rather than approximated, an equation is rearranged rather than iterated, and a numeric answer is produced at the end only when you ask for one, to whatever precision you specify. For anyone whose work involves deriving as well as calculating, that changes the nature of the tool entirely.

The language is one consistent system covering an unusually wide range: calculus and algebra, differential equations, linear algebra, number theory, probability and statistics, optimisation, graph theory, signal and image processing, machine learning, geometry, and the numerical methods underlying all of it. Because it is one language rather than a set of toolboxes, results move between areas without conversion.

The notebook is the working surface, and it mixes narrative text, executable input, results, graphics and interactive controls in one document. A single control wrapped around an expression turns it into a live manipulable graphic with sliders, which makes the notebook a genuine explanatory medium rather than a transcript of a session. Notebooks export to document and presentation formats with the mathematics intact.

The curated knowledge base is the part with no real equivalent elsewhere: chemical, physical, astronomical, geographic, linguistic, financial and historical data available as ordinary function calls with units and provenance attached. Combined with the units system, which carries dimensions through a calculation and catches mismatches, it removes a class of error that ordinarily gets caught in review or not at all.

Installation Notes

  • Keep the front end and kernel expectations in mind on very long computations, an abandoned kernel keeps its memory until quit.
  • Curated data functions need a connection, everything else works offline.
  • Use notebooks as documents rather than scratchpads, the narrative around the code is what makes them worth keeping.
