Overview

Deleting a file usually does not delete anything. It removes the entry that pointed at the data and marks the space as available, and until something else is written there the data is entirely intact. That is the window this application works in, and it is why the single most important instruction in the whole category is to stop using the drive the moment you realise something is missing.

The quick scan reads the file system structures and reconstructs entries that were removed but not yet overwritten. It is fast, it recovers original file names and folder structure, and on a recent accidental deletion it is usually all that is needed. If the file table itself is damaged, formatted away or unreadable, the deep scan takes over and reads the drive sector by sector, identifying files by their internal signatures rather than by any index.

The deep scan recovers content without names, since the names lived in the structure that is gone, so results are grouped by file type with a preview for each. Previewing before recovery is the important part: photographs, documents, video and audio all render in the results list so you can confirm a file is genuinely intact rather than recovering several thousand candidates and sorting them afterwards.

Beyond simple deletion, the application handles a broader set of failures: formatted partitions, partitions that vanished from the table, drives Windows offers to format because it cannot read them, memory cards and camera media, external drives and machines that no longer start, which are handled through a bootable stick built from inside the application. There is also a separate repair mode for video and photograph files that are present but will not open, which reconstructs headers and indexes using an intact file from the same device as a reference.

Installation Notes

• Stop using the affected drive immediately. Every write reduces what can be recovered, and installing this application onto that drive is the worst possible first move.
• Recover to a different drive than the one being scanned. Writing recovered files back onto the source destroys what has not been recovered yet.
• Run the quick scan first. If it finds what you need, there is no reason to spend hours on a deep scan.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
