Overview

WPS Office 2020 is the suite people install when they need to open, edit and hand back documents in the formats everyone else uses, without giving up half a disk and a quarter of an hour to the installation. The whole package is a fraction of the size of the mainstream suites, it launches in a couple of seconds on ordinary hardware, and the ribbon layout is close enough to what people already know that nobody needs retraining.

The suite is four applications sharing one window. Writer handles word processing with styles, sections, headers and footers, tables, footnotes, track changes, mail merge and a full reference and citation surface. Spreadsheets covers formulas, pivot tables, conditional formatting, charts, filters and data validation with the function set that ordinary business workbooks depend on. Presentation covers slide masters, transitions, animation, speaker notes and a presenter view. The PDF module reads, annotates, merges, splits and converts documents without a separate application.

Format compatibility is the reason it is in this catalog. Files written by the mainstream suite open with layout, fonts, formulas and embedded objects intact, and files saved here go back the other way without the recipient noticing anything unusual. The native formats are supported alongside the older binary ones, and the suite can also read and write the open document formats and the plain text and delimited variants for anyone moving data between systems.

The tabbed workspace is the part that quietly changes how people work. Every open file, of any type, is a tab in a single window, so a report, its source spreadsheet and the slide deck built from both sit side by side and switch instantly rather than scattering across the taskbar. Drag a tab out and it becomes its own window for anyone working across two monitors.

Installation Notes

• Set your file associations after install if you want this suite to own the common document types, the setup leaves existing associations alone by default.
• Install the extra font pack during setup if you regularly receive documents built elsewhere, substituted fonts are the usual cause of a layout that looks slightly wrong.
• The cloud panel can be turned off entirely from the options if you only ever work with local files.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
