Overview

Dreamweaver occupies a position that no other tool quite fills, which is a proper code editor with a visual layout view attached and a site management layer wrapped around both. The code side is a real editor. The visual side has been rebuilt around modern layout rather than the table based approach the application was originally known for. Live view renders with a current engine so what you see reflects what a browser will do, elements can be selected and adjusted on the page with the change written back into the stylesheet, media queries can be added and previewed at breakpoints with a resizable viewport, and the visual media query bar shows which rules apply at the width you are looking at.

The site management layer is what actually keeps people using it. A defined site maps local files against a remote server, transfer over the common protocols is built in with synchronisation that compares timestamps rather than uploading everything, the link checker finds broken references across the whole site, and check in and check out prevents two people overwriting each other on a shared server. • Keep a local copy as the source of truth and push to the server, rather than editing files directly on the remote.
