Overview

XD was built specifically for screen design, and its defining quality is speed. Files with hundreds of artboards open instantly, scrolling a large canvas does not stutter, and the tool set is deliberately narrow. There is no print production, no colour separation, no page layout, just what is needed to design an interface, prototype it and hand it to whoever is building it.

The design side is artboard based, with presets for the common device sizes, repeat grid for turning one list item into a populated list by dragging, responsive resize that keeps elements anchored correctly as an artboard changes size, stacks for laying out elements that push each other along, and components with states so a button carries its hover, pressed and disabled appearance inside a single object.

Prototyping is the reason most teams reach for it. Artboards are wired together with drag connections, transitions carry easing and duration, auto animate interpolates between two artboards so a card expanding into a full page looks like real motion rather than a cut, and overlays, scroll groups, drag triggers, voice triggers and timed transitions cover the interactions a static mockup cannot express.

Handoff closes the loop. A design can be shared as a link that shows the working prototype, collects comments in context on the exact element being discussed, and exposes measurements, colour values, text styles and downloadable assets to whoever is implementing it. Design tokens and shared libraries keep colours, character styles and components consistent across a set of files rather than drifting apart.

Key Features

  • Artboard based design with presets for the common device and screen sizes
  • Repeat grid for populating lists and card layouts by dragging
  • Responsive resize and stacks for layouts that adapt as artboards change
  • Components with states covering hover, pressed, disabled and custom variations
  • Prototype wiring with easing, duration and auto animate between artboards
  • Overlays, scroll groups, drag and timed triggers for realistic interaction
  • Shared links showing a working prototype with in context commenting
  • Developer handoff with measurements, colour values, text styles and asset export
  • Shared libraries for keeping colours, styles and components consistent across files
  • Plugin support for content population, accessibility checking and export workflows

What Changed in This Build

  • Faster file open on documents with several hundred artboards
  • Improved auto animate accuracy on nested components
  • Export presets extended for additional screen densities
  • Reduced memory use on long prototyping sessions

Installation Notes

  • Build a component library before designing screens. Retrofitting components onto finished artboards is far slower than starting with them.
  • Name artboards meaningfully from the start, since prototype wiring and handoff both surface those names to everyone else.
  • Keep prototype flows on separate home artboards rather than one enormous web of connections, which becomes unreadable quickly.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Is it a vector illustration tool?

Only incidentally. It draws basic vector shapes for interface work but has none of the illustration or print production depth of a dedicated vector application.

Does handoff need anything installed?

No. The shared link opens in a browser with measurements, styles and downloadable assets available there.

Can it import from other design tools?

It imports the common design file formats and native files from the rest of the suite, though complex effects may need rebuilding.
