Overview

Affinity Designer is the application that made a serious dent in a market nobody thought could be dented. It is a full vector illustration tool that also does raster work in the same document, with performance that stays smooth on artwork heavy enough to make older applications stall, and it does it as a one time purchase rather than a monthly line item.

The persona system is the structural idea. The same document opens in a vector persona with beziers, shapes, boolean operations and stroke control, or in a pixel persona with brushes, erasers, dodge and burn and selection tools, or in an export persona built for slicing artwork into output assets. Switching persona changes the toolset and leaves the artwork alone, so a vector illustration can be textured with real brush work and then exported at a dozen sizes without ever leaving the file.

The drawing tools are complete. Pen and node editing with smart snapping, live corner rounding on any node, shape builder style boolean operations, contours and expand stroke, non destructive live filters, blend modes and adjustment layers, grids and guides including isometric grids that constrain drawing to the plane, and a symbol system where an edit to one instance updates the rest.

The details are what people notice after a week. History is unlimited and survives a save, so an undo stack can be walked back the following morning. The pixel preview shows exactly how the vector artwork will rasterise at the target resolution while you are still drawing it. Documents can hold multiple artboards at different sizes, and the export persona writes every slice, at every scale, in every format, in one operation.

Key Features

  • Vector and raster work in the same document through the persona system
  • Pen and node editing with smart snapping and live corner rounding
  • Boolean operations, contours, expand stroke and non destructive live filters
  • Pixel persona with brushes, erasers, selections and retouching on the same artwork
  • Live pixel preview showing exactly how vector artwork rasterises at the target size
  • Unlimited history that is saved with the document and survives a restart
  • Symbols with instance linking, plus constraints for responsive layout work
  • Isometric and custom grids that constrain drawing to a plane
  • Multiple artboards at different sizes within one document
  • Export persona writing every slice at every scale and format in one pass

What Changed in This Build

  • Faster rendering on documents with very large numbers of live filters
  • Improved import fidelity on files from the mainstream vector applications
  • Node editing snapping reworked for tighter control on dense paths
  • Export persona now remembers per slice settings between sessions

Installation Notes

  • Turn on hardware acceleration in preferences if your card supports it, the difference on complex artwork is substantial.
  • Set the document DPI at creation if the artwork will ever be rasterised, the pixel preview depends on it being right.
  • Files from the mainstream vector applications import well, but check type and effects, those are where conversion differences show.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Is it a replacement for the mainstream vector editor?

For a great deal of illustration, identity and interface work, yes. Print production with heavy separations and colour management workflows is where the mainstream tool still has more depth.

Does it open the common vector formats?

Yes, both directions, along with the standard exchange formats and the layered raster formats.

Is it a subscription?

No. It is a single purchase with no term limit.
