Overview

Canva took the position that most design work is not original design work. Most of it is a social post, a slide deck, a poster, a menu or a certificate that needs to look competent and consistent, and for that a template with editable structure beats a blank canvas. The desktop application brings that model out of the browser into a proper window with local file handling, offline access to recent work and faster rendering on large documents.

The editing surface is a page based canvas with layers, alignment guides, grouping, transparency and blend modes, plus text with full font control, effects and curved type. Elements are drawn from a library that runs to millions of items across shapes, illustrations, charts, video, audio and photography, all searchable by keyword and filterable by style, and this build has the pro tier of that library unlocked rather than watermarked.

The brand tooling is what makes it stick in an organisation. A brand kit holds palettes, fonts, logos and templates, and everything created from it inherits those choices, so a team producing a hundred pieces a month stays visually consistent without a designer reviewing each one. Templates can be locked so that only nominated fields are editable, which prevents a well meaning colleague from redesigning a layout by accident.

The assisted tools cover the tasks people used to open a heavier application for: background removal from a photograph in one action, magic resize that reflows a design into another aspect ratio, object erasing, image expansion beyond the original frame, text to image generation, and a bulk create function that fills a template from a spreadsheet to produce a set of variants in one pass. Output covers screen formats, print ready PDF with bleed and crop marks, video and animated formats.

Installation Notes

  • Set up the brand kit before producing work rather than after, retrofitting palettes and fonts across finished documents is tedious.
  • Use print export with bleed for anything going to a printer, the screen export has no bleed area at all.
  • Large element libraries stream on demand, so the first search after install is slower than every one afterwards.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.
