Overview

Opera has always taken the position that a browser should ship with the things everyone installs anyway. The rendering engine is Chromium, so compatibility is a settled question, but the shell around it includes an ad and tracker blocker, a network privacy service, a sidebar for messengers, and a set of window management ideas that the larger browsers eventually copy.

The blocker runs at the network layer rather than as an extension, which means it starts before the page does and costs less than an equivalent add on. Blocking a page's advertising also removes most of what makes it slow, and the browser reports the time saved per site, which is either informative or smug depending on your mood. Tracker blocking and cryptomining protection are separate switches.

The privacy service is a proxy rather than a full tunnel, and the distinction matters: browser traffic is routed through it and hidden from the local network, but other applications on the machine are unaffected. It is free, unmetered, and enabled with one switch, which makes it the right tool for public network browsing and the wrong tool for anything needing a real endpoint elsewhere.

The window itself is where the ideas are. Workspaces separate sets of tabs into named groups so work and personal browsing do not share a strip, tab islands automatically group tabs opened from the same source, the sidebar keeps messengers and tools one click away without a tab each, and a pop out video player floats a playing video above other windows while you carry on working.

Installation Notes

• The privacy proxy only covers browser traffic, anything else on the machine goes out normally.
• Turn the blocker off per site rather than globally when a page misbehaves, most breakage is one element rather than the whole page.
• Workspaces are worth setting up on day one, retrofitting them onto sixty open tabs is a chore.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
