Overview

A standard system install arrives carrying a great deal that a given machine will never use: a store, a collection of bundled applications, indexing and telemetry services, assistants, and a background update mechanism that decides for itself when to consume the disk. On a modern workstation that overhead disappears into the noise. On a decade old laptop with a spinning disk and four gigabytes of memory it is the difference between usable and not.

This build removes that layer. The result boots in a fraction of the time, idles at a small fraction of the memory a standard install uses, and leaves considerably more disk free before anything of yours has been installed. The desktop, the file manager, the settings, the networking stack, the driver model and the application compatibility layer are all intact, so ordinary software installs and runs exactly as it would on a full system.

The compact variant goes further by keeping the system files in a compressed state, which is aimed at machines with very small solid state drives where the standard install would leave almost nothing free. The recovery environment is included so a machine can still be repaired, reset or booted into a command prompt when something goes wrong, which is the piece that some stripped builds omit and then regret.

This is a targeted tool rather than a general recommendation. It suits an old laptop, a machine dedicated to a single application, a test bench or a kiosk. It is a poorer fit for a primary machine that will want the store, the modern application platform or the full search index, because putting those components back after the fact is considerably more work than installing a standard image would have been.

Key Features

  • Background services, bundled applications and telemetry components removed
  • Fast boot and low idle memory use on old and constrained hardware
  • Substantially smaller disk footprint before any of your own software is installed
  • Compact variant keeping system files compressed for very small drives
  • Recovery environment retained for repair, reset and command prompt access
  • Full driver model, networking stack and application compatibility layer intact
  • Professional edition base with local group policy and remote desktop host available
  • No security module, secure boot or processor generation requirement
  • Preactivated with no prompt during or after setup
  • Automatic update mechanism disabled by default rather than merely deferred

What Changed in This Build

  • Base image refreshed with current cumulative updates before the components were removed
  • Additional storage and network drivers integrated for older hardware
  • Compact variant rebuilt for a smaller installed footprint
  • Recovery environment fixed on systems where it previously failed to register

Installation Notes

  • Check that the software you depend on runs before committing a machine to this. Removed components cannot easily be added back.
  • Install your drivers manually after setup. A stripped image carries fewer of them than a standard one.
  • This is aimed at old or single purpose machines. On a capable primary machine a standard image is the better choice.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

What was removed?

The store and bundled applications, indexing and telemetry services, assistants, and the automatic update mechanism. The desktop, settings, networking and compatibility layer remain.

Can I add the store back?

Not reliably. If you need the modern application platform, install a standard image instead.

Does normal software still install?

Yes. The driver model and compatibility layer are intact, so desktop applications behave as they would on a full system.
