Overview

A lite image exists for machines where the stock install spends more of its life servicing itself than serving the person using it. Old laptops with mechanical drives, small form factor machines, kiosks, till systems, test benches and anything with four gigabytes of memory or less all behave noticeably differently when the background work is simply not there to begin with.

The removals are the substance of it. Bundled consumer applications, the store framework, the assistant, the telemetry and diagnostics services, the advertising and suggestion components, the game recording overlay, the tablet and touch layers, the family of scheduled maintenance tasks, and the reserved storage that the stock install sets aside for updates. What remains is the desktop, the shell, the settings surface and the platform underneath.

The Professional capabilities stay where they are meaningful. Remote Desktop as a host, the local Group Policy editor, domain join and BitLocker are all present, since these are exactly the machines that get administered remotely. The default settings are also changed rather than merely left available: updates are set to notify rather than install and restart, and the search indexer and superfetch style services are off, which on a mechanical drive is the single biggest difference.

The image comes in a full ISO and in a smaller variant for machines with very limited storage, and both write to a USB stick and install in the ordinary way with no additional steps. It is preactivated so there is no activation stage, and applications install afterwards exactly as they would on a stock system, since the platform itself is not modified, only its payload.

Installation Notes

• Removed components cannot be added back afterwards. If you need the store framework, install the standard image instead.
• Check that any specialist software you depend on does not rely on a removed component before deploying this widely.
• Back up before installing. A clean install removes everything on the target partition.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
