Overview

There is still a large population of machines that will never run a current operating system well: netbooks, single board industrial terminals, workshop computers driving a machine tool, and perfectly serviceable laptops with two cores and four gigabytes of memory. This image exists for those, a Professional edition with the components that mostly serve modern hardware taken out before the image was rebuilt.

The reductions are practical rather than reckless. Sample media, the tablet and handwriting stack, the legacy games, speech support, the media centre and a range of rarely used background services are removed. The kernel, driver model, networking stack, security components and the parts anything actually depends on are left intact, so ordinary software installs and runs the way it does on a full image.

The result shows up in the numbers that matter on weak hardware. The install footprint is a fraction of the standard image, memory use at idle sits far lower, and boot on a mechanical drive completes in a fraction of the usual time. On a machine with a slow disk, that last figure is the difference between a computer people use and one they avoid.

The Professional edition features that older workflows depend on are still present: Remote Desktop as a host, local Group Policy, domain join, encrypted file system, XP mode compatibility for legacy applications, and full 32-bit software support. Both architectures are provided so an old x86 only machine and a 64-bit workstation can be served from the same download.

Installation Notes

• Back up anything on the target disk first. A clean install removes the contents of the partition you choose.
• Write the image with a tool that handles the boot sector properly, several older machines will not boot media written by a simple file copy.
• Check that a driver exists for your network adapter before wiping, getting online is far harder afterwards if it does not.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
