Overview

There is a specific and persistent reason this image still gets downloaded, and it has nothing to do with nostalgia. A great deal of laboratory equipment, machine tools, medical instruments, industrial controllers and test rigs shipped with control software that only ever worked here, driven by parallel port, serial or an old proprietary card, and replacing the machine means replacing equipment worth many times what the computer cost.

This is the integral edition, meaning the service pack and the subsequent update rollups are already folded into the image rather than being installed afterwards over a long afternoon. Additional mass storage drivers are integrated so setup recognises controllers the original media never knew about, and the multilingual pack allows the display language to be set without hunting for a separate localised image.

The Professional edition features are all present: Remote Desktop as a host, local Group Policy, domain join, encrypting file system, the full networking stack, and the compatibility layers that older applications expect. The interface can be set to the classic style for anyone maintaining a machine where the operators were trained on a specific screen layout.

It should be run the way this kind of machine has always been run: isolated. On a dedicated network segment or off the network entirely, with data moved by removable media, which is how equipment control machines have been managed for years anyway. As a general purpose computer connected to the internet, this is not a sensible choice and nobody should pretend otherwise.

Installation Notes

• Keep this machine off the open internet. Isolated network or no network is the correct configuration for a legacy control machine.
• Check that drivers exist for your hardware before wiping, modern components frequently have none at all here.
• Back up the existing install and any equipment configuration before touching partitions, some control software cannot be reinstalled without vendor media.
