Overview

Live is built around one idea that no other production tool committed to as completely: the same project can be viewed as a grid of loops you trigger freely, or as a linear timeline you arrange and finish. Session view is where things get written, with clips fired in any combination until a structure emerges. Arrangement view is where that structure gets committed to a running order, mixed and exported. Moving between the two is a drag, not an export, and that is why so many records started as somebody messing about in a grid.

Everything in the application is elastic. Audio dropped into a project is analysed and warped to the project tempo automatically, which means samples recorded at different speeds sit together without being manually chopped. The warping engine offers several algorithms suited to different material, from percussive hits that need transients preserved to sustained pads where smoothness matters more, and the warp markers can be dragged by hand when the automatic analysis misreads a groove.

The Suite tier is the full collection, and it is a large amount of material. The instruments cover analogue style synthesis, wavetable synthesis, physical modelling, sampling with a full multi sample engine, drum racks and the granular and resonance devices that give the platform its recognisable character. The effect set covers dynamics, equalisation, saturation, delay, reverb, modulation and the creative mangling devices, plus the audio to MIDI conversion tools that turn a hummed line into notes.

Around the devices is the routing and performance layer. Every track can be routed to any other, racks let devices be chained, layered and macro controlled with eight knobs, and Max for Live is included for building or installing custom devices. External hardware is handled through low latency audio drivers, and controller support maps a grid controller to the session view so a whole set can be performed without touching the mouse.

Key Features

  • Session view for free triggering and arrangement view for linear finishing, sharing one project
  • Automatic tempo analysis and warping with several algorithms and hand editable warp markers
  • Full instrument collection including analogue style, wavetable, physical modelling and sampling engines
  • Full effect collection covering dynamics, equalisation, saturation, delay, reverb and modulation
  • Drum racks, instrument racks and effect racks with eight macro controls each
  • Max for Live included for custom devices and the third party device ecosystem
  • Audio to MIDI conversion for melody, harmony and drum extraction from recorded audio
  • Comprehensive routing with any track able to feed any other, plus external hardware routing
  • Low latency audio driver support with plugin hosting for third party instruments and effects
  • Controller mapping including grid controller integration for performing the session view

What Changed in This Build

  • New devices added to the Suite instrument and effect collection
  • Improved warping accuracy on complex polyphonic material
  • MIDI editing tools expanded with generative and transformation options
  • Lower CPU use on large sets with many active devices

Installation Notes

  • Install the sound packs to a drive with room. The application itself is modest but the full library is not.
  • Set your audio buffer low for recording and higher for mixing. Fighting clicks with a low buffer on a heavy set is a losing battle.
  • Install third party plugins before scanning, and rescan from preferences rather than restarting repeatedly.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

What does Suite add over the smaller tiers?

The complete instrument and effect collection, Max for Live, and the full sound pack library rather than a subset.

Can it host third party plugins?

Yes, the common plugin formats are supported and scanned from folders you choose.

Do I need a controller?

No. Everything works from the keyboard and mouse. A grid controller mainly helps when performing session view live.
