Overview

FL Studio works differently from the tape style sequencers that came before it, and that difference is why an enormous amount of modern music is made in it. You build short patterns in a step sequencer and a piano roll, then arrange those patterns as blocks on a playlist. Ideas come together very quickly because nothing has to be recorded in real time before it exists.

The piano roll is the part people move here for. It is widely considered the best implementation available, with chord and scale tools, per note velocity, panning, pitch and modulation, slide and portamento notes, arpeggiation, strumming, ghost notes from other channels for reference, and a set of manipulation tools for quantising, humanising, flipping and randomising a phrase without leaving the editor.

The mixer carries as many inserts as a project needs, with routing to any other track for buses and submixes, sidechain sends, per track effect chains up to ten deep, and full automation on every parameter in the entire program. Automation clips sit on the playlist alongside the audio and pattern blocks, so a filter sweep is an object you can move and copy rather than a hidden envelope.

The Producer Edition includes audio recording and full playlist audio editing alongside the pattern workflow, and this build carries the bundled instrument and effect collection unlocked. That covers the synthesisers, the sampler and slicing tools, drum machines, the vocoder and pitch tools, and the whole effect set including reverbs, delays, compressors, equalisers, distortion, mastering chain and the spectral analysers. Third party VST instruments and effects load alongside them, and lifetime free updates have been the policy since the beginning.

Installation Notes

• Install an ASIO driver and select it on first launch. Latency complaints almost always come from running on the default Windows driver.
• Set the buffer size low for recording and higher for mixing. One setting rarely suits both stages of a project.
• Save project data with the file when moving a session to another machine, otherwise samples and third party plugins go missing.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
