Steinberg Cubase Pro

Overview

Cubase Pro is the top tier of Steinberg's production line, and the Pro distinction matters: the lower tiers cap track counts, drop the surround and immersive busses, remove the score editor and leave out a large part of the bundled instrument and effect set. This build is the unrestricted one, so nothing in the project window is greyed out because of a tier check.

The arrangement side is a track based project window with audio, instrument, MIDI, sampler, folder, marker, arranger, chord and video tracks all living on the same timeline. Comping across takes is handled in lanes with a swipe to pick the keeper, warping and quantising audio to a grid or to a reference groove is built in, and the chord track can drive the harmony of any MIDI part sitting under it.

MIDI editing is where the package has always been strongest. The key editor, drum editor, list editor and full notation score editor all address the same data, and the logical editor lets you build transformations that no menu item covers. Expression maps handle articulation switching for orchestral libraries, and the note expression system stores per note controller data rather than forcing everything through channel wide automation.

The mixer is a full console with insert and send racks, group and FX channels, VCA faders, direct routing, surround and immersive busses, and a control room section for separate monitor and cue mixes. Bundled processing covers channel strip dynamics and EQ on every channel, convolution and algorithmic reverb, amp simulation, mastering chains and a metering suite, alongside an instrument set spanning virtual analogue, sampling, drums and acoustic pianos.

Installation Notes

• Install the bundled content library to a separate large drive during setup rather than filling the system disk.
• Set your audio device buffer once at the start of a session, changing it mid project reinitialises every plugin.
• This build runs without activation hardware, so leave any dongle drivers from an older install uninstalled.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
