Overview
Dimension exists for designers who need a photographic looking product image and have no interest in learning a full three dimensional package. It does not model. It stages: you bring in a shape, put a material on it, place it in a scene, light it, and render a photographic image out the other end, using an interface built around design vocabulary rather than around polygon editing.
The staging workflow is the whole application. Models come from the bundled starter shapes, from the stock library or from the common exchange formats exported by a modelling package. Materials are applied by dragging them onto a surface, with the physical properties, roughness, metallic response, translucency and bump behaviour exposed as sliders rather than as a node graph. Graphics designed in the vector or raster applications are applied as decals that conform to a curved surface, which is the specific thing packaging design needs.
Lighting is where the photographic quality comes from. An environment image lights the whole scene physically, so a product placed on a background photograph picks up the colour and direction of the light in that photograph automatically. The match image feature analyses the background and sets the camera perspective, the horizon and the light direction to match it, which removes the single most difficult part of compositing a rendered object into a real photograph.
Rendering runs through a physically based engine with a live preview that refines continuously while you work, so the framing decision is made against something close to the final result rather than against a wireframe. Final output writes the flat image plus the separate passes and object masks, so the composite can be adjusted afterwards in a raster editor without re rendering the scene.

Installation Notes
- Keep imported models reasonable in polygon count, the application stages models rather than optimising them and a dense scan will slow everything down.
- Render out the passes and masks with the final image even if you think you will not need them, re rendering later is far more expensive than storing them now.
- Use match image before adjusting the camera by hand, correcting a matched camera is easier than matching one by eye.
Before You Start
Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

Decals conform to curved surfaces, which is exactly what label and packaging work needs. Complex geometry may need the placement adjusted by hand.
It helps, but the render engine uses the processor heavily too. Core count matters more than anything else for final output time.
