Overview

AutoCAD is the file format as much as the application. DWG is what consultants, contractors, fabricators and councils exchange, and being the reference implementation means drawings open exactly as they were drawn rather than approximately. For anyone who receives drawings from other people, that is the whole argument.

The 2D drafting core is mature to the point of invisibility: precise coordinate entry, object snaps, polar and dynamic tracking, layers with states and filters, blocks with attributes and dynamic parameters, external references, annotative scaling, dimension and multileader styles, hatching with associativity, and a sheet set manager that keeps a whole drawing package numbered and plotted consistently.

3D work covers solid, surface and mesh modelling with boolean operations, sweeps, lofts, revolves, sectioning and visual styles, plus rendering with materials and lighting. It is not a substitute for a dedicated modeller on complex organic geometry, but for the mechanical and architectural solids most drafting offices produce, it is entirely sufficient and it keeps everything in the same file.

The specialised toolsets included with the full package are what turn a general drafting application into a discipline tool: architecture with walls, doors and schedules, mechanical with standard parts libraries, electrical with schematic tooling, plant and piping with spec driven components, map for GIS data, and raster design for working over scanned drawings. Automation runs through LISP, scripts, actions and the .NET API.

Installation Notes

• Install the specialised toolsets you actually need rather than all of them, each adds significantly to disk footprint and first launch time.
• Set your default plot style table and template before starting production work so drawings do not need retrofitting.
• Migrate custom LISP routines and CUIX customisation through the migration tool on first launch rather than copying files manually.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
