Overview
SolidWorks is the mechanical design package that most product engineering teams learned on and most machine shops expect files from. The model is history based and parametric: sketches drive features, features build parts, parts mate into assemblies, and drawings derive from all of it with dimensions that update when the model does.
Part modelling covers the full feature set, extrude, revolve, sweep, loft, boundary, wrap and the entire dress up group of fillets, chamfers, drafts and shells, with configurations for handling variants of the same part in a single file. Equations and design tables drive parameters from formulas or a spreadsheet, and the sheet metal environment handles bends, reliefs, gussets and flat pattern output for laser and press work.
Assemblies scale to thousands of components with mates, patterns, flexible sub assemblies, motion study for kinematics, interference and clearance checking, and large design review mode for opening a big assembly quickly. Drawings produce fully dimensioned production output with section and detail views, bills of material, balloons, GD and T annotation and tables that update with the model.
The Premium configuration adds the tooling that would otherwise be separate purchases: structural and thermal simulation with meshing and results plots, motion analysis, routing for pipe, tube, electrical cable and harness design, ScanTo3D for reverse engineering from mesh data, TolAnalyst for stack up analysis, and CircuitWorks for exchanging data with electronic design tools.

Installation Notes
- Install with a certified graphics driver rather than the consumer gaming driver, it makes a visible difference to viewport stability.
- Set up a file vault or at least a consistent folder structure before starting a large assembly, reference paths are painful to fix later.
- The install is large and slow. Extract to a fast local drive rather than running setup from external storage.
Before You Start
Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.
If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.
Frequently Asked
Simulation, motion analysis, routing, ScanTo3D, TolAnalyst and CircuitWorks on top of the standard modelling, assembly and drawing set.
Yes, along with Parasolid, STL, DXF and several native formats from other packages, with feature recognition available on import.
Yes. Files are upgraded on open and the upgrade is one way, so archive originals before opening a customer's model.
