Overview
Painter replaced a workflow that used to involve flattening a model into a UV layout, painting on that layout in a 2D image editor, and repeatedly reloading it to see whether the seams lined up. Here you paint on the model itself, in a viewport that shows the final shaded result while you work, and the 2D layout updates alongside as a byproduct rather than as the thing you are editing.
The layer system is the part that changes how texturing is done. Layers hold full material definitions rather than a single colour channel, so one layer carries base colour, roughness, metalness, height and normal information at once. On top of those go masks, and masks can be generated procedurally from the mesh itself. Curvature drives edge wear, ambient occlusion drives dirt in crevices, world space position drives dust settling on upward faces. Change the model and every one of those regenerates.
Smart materials package that whole stack into a single draggable asset. Applying worn steel to a new object is one drop, and the wear appears in exactly the places the geometry implies rather than where you remembered to paint it. The included library covers metals, plastics, fabrics, woods, stones, skin and the surface treatments that sit on top of them, and custom smart materials can be saved and reused across a project or a whole studio.
Output is where the resolution independence pays off. The document holds material definitions, not baked pixels, so the same project exports at any resolution without repainting. Export presets target the common renderers and real time engines with the correct channel packing for each, so the maps land in the format the destination expects rather than requiring a channel shuffling pass afterwards. Baking of the underlying mesh maps happens inside the application from a high resolution source mesh.
Key Features
- Paint directly onto the 3D model with a live shaded viewport and a synchronised 2D layout view
- Layer stack where each layer carries a full material definition across every channel at once
- Procedural mask generators driven by curvature, occlusion, position and thickness from the mesh
- Smart materials that apply an entire worn, dirtied or aged surface stack in one drop
- Large included library of metals, plastics, fabrics, woods, stones and surface treatments
- Mesh map baking from a high resolution source inside the application
- Brush engine with alphas, stencils, projection painting and symmetry
- Resolution independent documents that export at any size without repainting
- Export presets with correct channel packing for the common renderers and real time engines
- Substance file support so parametric materials remain adjustable after they are applied
What Changed in This Build
- Faster baking on high polygon source meshes
- New smart materials and surface presets added to the library
- Improved viewport shading accuracy against the common real time engines
- Layer stack performance improved on documents with very deep hierarchies

Installation Notes
- Bring in a clean UV layout. Overlapping or badly packed UVs cause bleeding that no amount of painting will fix.
- Bake mesh maps before you start painting. The procedural masks depend on them and regenerate incorrectly without them.
- Work at a lower document resolution and raise it only for export. The document is resolution independent so nothing is lost.
Before You Start
Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.
If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.
Frequently Asked
Only for baking detail into the maps. You can texture a single mesh without one, you just lose the baked detail those masks rely on.
The common real time engines and offline renderers all have presets with the right channel packing. Custom presets can be built for anything else.
Yes. The document stores material definitions rather than baked pixels, so resolution is an export setting.
