Overview
3ds Max is the general purpose 3D application that most architectural visualisation studios and a great many game art teams build in. Its strength is the modelling side: an editable poly workflow with a modifier stack that keeps every operation live and reorderable, so a decision made at the start of a model can be changed after twenty more have been stacked on top of it.
The modifier stack really is the defining idea. Bend, twist, shell, symmetry, turbosmooth, cloth, displacement and dozens more sit above the base geometry as separate live entries that can be toggled, reordered, collapsed or adjusted at any point. Around it sit spline modelling, subdivision surfaces, boolean operations that produce usable topology, and the retopology tools for turning a dense scan or sculpt into something with clean edge flow.
Animation and rigging cover character and mechanical work alike, with a full keyframe surface, controllers and constraints, inverse kinematics, skinning with weight painting, morph targets, and a particle and dynamics system for smoke, debris, cloth and rigid body simulation. The scripting language and the plugin interface are why so many studios run a pipeline through it, since almost any repetitive task can be automated.
Rendering ships with the physically based Arnold engine included, and the material system feeds the common third party engines as well. Texture work runs through a node based material editor with substance support, camera and lighting tools are physically based, and the state sets and scene management features handle delivering several variants of the same scene without maintaining separate files.

Installation Notes
- Use a certified graphics driver rather than the newest available one. Viewport stability in this application is driver sensitive.
- Install third party renderers and plugins after the host so their installers find the correct plugin folders.
- Set your project folder structure before starting work, since asset paths are the usual cause of a scene opening with missing textures on another machine.
Before You Start
Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.
If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.
Frequently Asked
Yes, Arnold is included. The material system also feeds the common third party engines if you install one.
Yes. Newer versions open older scenes, though saving down to an earlier release is limited to a few generations back.
It is one of the standard choices for it, particularly for interior and exterior visualisation with heavy vegetation and furnishing.
