Overview

Civil 3D is the drafting application extended with a civil engineering model underneath, which changes what a drawing is. Lines on a plan are no longer lines, they are alignments, profiles, surfaces and corridors, and the plans, sections, profiles and quantity reports are views onto that model rather than separate drawings that have to be corrected individually when the design moves.

Surfaces are the foundation. Existing ground is built from survey points, breaklines, contours or point cloud data, proposed surfaces are generated from grading objects and corridor models, and the two compare to produce cut and fill volumes that update whenever either side changes. Point groups organise survey data by description, and the survey database keeps figures and observations linked to the drawing.

Roadway design runs through alignments, profiles and corridors. A horizontal alignment carries design criteria checking against a chosen standard, a vertical profile is drawn against the existing ground with curve criteria applied, and the corridor extrudes an assembly of subassemblies along the alignment to produce the modelled road surface, with intersections and roundabouts handled by their own object types. Cross sections and quantity takeoff come out of the corridor rather than being drawn.

Pipe networks cover gravity and pressure systems with parts lists, structure and pipe rules, interference checking between networks, and hydraulic analysis handoff. Plan and profile sheets generate automatically along a view frame group, labels and tables are style driven so an office standard is applied once rather than per drawing, and the data shortcut system shares surfaces and alignments between drawings so a team works from one source.

Key Features

  • Dynamic surfaces from survey points, breaklines, contours and point cloud data
  • Cut and fill volume calculation that updates as either surface changes
  • Horizontal alignments with design criteria checking against a chosen standard
  • Vertical profiles drawn against existing ground with curve criteria applied
  • Corridor modelling from assemblies and subassemblies, including intersections and roundabouts
  • Automatic cross section generation and quantity takeoff from the corridor
  • Gravity and pressure pipe networks with parts lists, rules and interference checking
  • Grading objects with feature lines for site and pond design
  • Automatic plan and profile sheet production along a view frame group
  • Data shortcuts for sharing surfaces and alignments across a project team

What Changed in This Build

  • Faster surface rebuild on very large survey datasets
  • Improved corridor performance on long alignments with many regions
  • Pressure network parts library expanded
  • Sheet production improvements for large plan and profile sets

Installation Notes

  • Set up the project template and styles before starting. Restyling labels and tables across a finished sheet set is a long job.
  • Use data shortcuts rather than copying surfaces between drawings, so the whole team works from a single source.
  • Keep surfaces to the extent you need. Building one from an entire survey dataset when a subset would do costs performance on every rebuild.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Does it include the standard drafting application?

Yes. Everything the general application does is present, with the civil model and its objects added on top.

Will plain drawings open?

Yes, and drawings from here open elsewhere, though civil objects appear as proxy graphics without the toolset installed.

Can it take point cloud data?

Yes. Point clouds import and can be used to build surfaces directly, which is the usual route from a scanned site survey.
