Overview

AutoCAD Electrical is the standard drafting application with a controls design toolset layered on top, which means the drawing environment is exactly the one every draughtsman already knows while the intelligence underneath understands that a line between two symbols is a wire and not a line. That distinction is the whole product, because it is what allows the drawing to generate its own reports rather than requiring someone to count terminals by hand.

The symbol libraries ship with hundreds of thousands of schematic and panel symbols covering the standards a controls engineer has to work to, along with manufacturer catalogue data for real components. Placing a contactor pulls its catalogue entry, its contact configuration and its terminal arrangement, so the parent and child contacts stay associated across sheets and a change on one propagates to the others automatically.

Wire numbering and component tagging run automatically according to a configurable scheme, either sequentially through the drawing set or referenced to sheet and line number. Cross referencing between coils and contacts updates as the design moves, source and destination arrows track signals between sheets, and circuits can be copied, reused and renumbered as a block rather than being redrawn.

Reports come out of the model without additional work, which is where the time is actually saved. Bills of material, wire from and to lists, terminal plans, cable summaries, purchase lists and panel layouts are generated from the drawing data and can be pushed back into the drawing as a table or exported to a spreadsheet. Panel layout drawings link back to the schematic so a component only exists once across both views.

Key Features

  • Standard drafting core with the full electrical controls toolset layered on it
  • Symbol libraries covering the common controls standards, with manufacturer catalogue data
  • Automatic wire numbering and component tagging with configurable schemes
  • Real time cross referencing between coils, contacts and related components
  • Signal source and destination arrows tracking connections across sheets
  • Circuit reuse with automatic renumbering when a block is copied into a new drawing
  • Panel layout drawings linked to the schematic so components stay synchronised
  • Automatic bills of material, wire lists, terminal plans and cable summaries
  • Programmable controller input and output module design with address tracking
  • Drawing set management with title block updates applied across every sheet

What Changed in This Build

  • Catalogue database refreshed with additional manufacturer component data
  • Faster report generation on large multi sheet drawing sets
  • Improved terminal strip editor handling of multi level terminals
  • Performance improvements when opening projects with several hundred drawings

Installation Notes

  • Install the catalogue and symbol libraries for your standard during setup. Adding them later requires a manual database path change.
  • Set the project wire numbering and tagging scheme before drawing, since changing it afterwards renumbers the entire set.
  • Keep projects in a consistent folder structure. Drawing references across a set are painful to repair once broken.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Is this the same as the standard drafting application?

It contains it. Everything the general application does is here, with the controls toolset, symbol libraries and reporting added on top.

Will plain drawings open in it?

Yes, and drawings made here open elsewhere, though the electrical intelligence is only editable in this toolset.

Can I use my own symbol library?

Yes. Custom symbols and catalogue entries can be added to a user library that survives updates.
