Overview
Inventor is built for people designing things that get manufactured, and every part of it reflects that. A part starts as a sketch with dimensions and geometric constraints, gets features applied to it, and remains editable through its history so a hole moved at the sketch level moves everywhere downstream. Nothing is a static shape, everything is a recipe, and the recipe is what gets adjusted when the client changes the specification.
Assemblies join parts with constraints and joints that describe how components actually relate. A joint is not a fixed position, it is a degree of freedom, so an assembly can be dragged to check clearance through a full range of motion, and interference between parts is detected rather than discovered at the workshop. Large assemblies use simplified representations and level of detail so a machine with thousands of components still opens and rotates.
The professional level tools cover what happens after the shape is settled. Stress and modal analysis run inside the application so a bracket can be checked before it is made. Frame generation builds structural assemblies from standard profile libraries with mitred and notched joints. Tube and pipe routing handles runs with proper bend rules. Sheet metal parts unfold into flat patterns with correct bend allowances, and weldment tools carry preparation, welds and machining as ordered stages.
Documentation is generated from the model. Drawing views, sections, details, exploded assembly views, bills of materials and parts lists all read from the assembly, so a design change ripples into the drawing set rather than requiring anyone to remember which sheets were affected. Exchange with the other packages in a mechanical pipeline runs through the standard neutral formats along with direct readers for the common native ones.

Installation Notes
- Set up a project file pointing at your working folders before starting. Assembly references depend on it and break without one.
- Fully constrain sketches before applying features. An underconstrained sketch shifts unpredictably when a dimension changes later.
- Use simplified representations on large assemblies rather than fighting the full model on every open.
Before You Start
Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.
If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.
Frequently Asked
Yes, through the neutral exchange formats and through direct readers for the common native ones.
Yes. Stress and modal analysis run inside the application at this level rather than requiring a separate package.
Yes. Views, sections and parts lists are generated from the model and refresh with it.
