Overview

Revit LT is the architectural half of the full building information modelling application, with the engineering disciplines and the more advanced customisation left out. For a practice doing architectural design and documentation rather than coordinating structural and services models in house, it covers the work at a fraction of the weight.

The fundamental idea is the same as the full product and it is the reason the platform exists. You model the building once, with walls, floors, roofs, ceilings, stairs, railings, doors, windows and structural elements that know what they are, and every plan, section, elevation, callout, schedule and sheet is a view of that single model. Move a wall and every drawing showing that wall updates, because they are not drawings of the building, they are windows onto it.

The architectural toolset is complete for its scope. Parametric families for building components with type and instance parameters, in place modelling for one off geometry, curtain walls with grids, mullions and panels, topography and site tools, room and area definition with tags and colour schemes, materials with appearance and identity data, and a family editor for building components that do not already exist in the library.

Documentation is where the time is saved. Sheets are composed from views with title blocks, dimensions and tags read their values from the model rather than being typed, schedules are generated from element data and stay live as the model changes, and legends and keynotes stay consistent across the whole set. Export covers the drawing exchange formats, the industry model exchange format for handing the model to a consultant, and rendered images for presentation.

Installation Notes

• Set up your project template, levels and view organisation before modelling, restructuring an established project is considerably more work than starting properly.
• Keep the model on a local drive while working, opening a large model across a network is where most of the reported slowness comes from.
• Purge unused families periodically, an old project accumulates content that inflates the file and slows every operation.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.
