Overview

Pro Tools is the standard in professional audio for the same reason certain formats are standard in video: sessions move between rooms, and everyone can open them. A recording studio, a mixing engineer and a post house on three continents can pass one session back and forth without conversion, and that interoperability is worth more to the industry than any individual feature.

The editing model is built for precision on recorded audio. Sample accurate editing with crossfades, playlists for holding multiple takes on one track, comping across those takes into a single performance, elastic audio for time and pitch manipulation, beat detection and quantisation on recorded material, and a clip gain layer that adjusts level before anything else in the chain touches it.

Mixing runs through a console model with input, insert, send and output stages per channel, buses and auxiliary inputs, VCA groups for controlling a set of faders together, full automation on every parameter with several modes and a proper editing view for automation data, and delay compensation across the whole path so nothing drifts as plugin latency accumulates.

For post production the video and audio sides stay locked together. Video tracks import alongside audio, timecode is honoured throughout, ADR tools handle looping and cue management, and the surround and immersive formats used for cinema delivery are supported natively. The bundled plugin set covers dynamics, equalisation, reverb, delay, modulation, pitch correction, noise reduction and metering, which is enough to finish a record before any third party is added.

Installation Notes

• Use an ASIO interface. The generic driver path works but the latency makes recording through it unpleasant.
• Keep session audio on a separate drive from the system disk, high track counts are storage bandwidth bound.
• Install plugins in the standard format folder before launching so they are scanned in one pass rather than on every start.
