Overview

Corona built its following on a specific promise: an image that looks right without a settings panel full of decisions you need a rendering background to make. There is essentially one quality control, it runs progressively so the picture refines as you watch, and stopping it when it looks finished is a legitimate workflow rather than a compromise.

It is an unbiased path tracer, which means light behaves correctly by default rather than needing tricks to fake bounce, caustics or soft shadow. Interior scenes with a single window resolve properly, materials with genuine physical properties respond the way the reference photograph does, and there is no separate global illumination stage to tune because the same engine handles everything.

Materials use a physically based model covering diffuse, reflection, refraction, translucency, absorption, subsurface scattering, displacement and layered coatings, with a full library included. The light setup covers area lights with shape control, a physical sun and sky driven by geographic position, image based environment lighting, and mesh lights for any geometry that should emit.

The interactive renderer is where most of the time is actually spent. It updates as you move objects, adjust materials or change lights, showing the real render rather than a viewport approximation, which turns look development into a continuous activity. Output supports the render passes needed for compositing, and the built in post processing handles exposure, tone mapping, bloom and glare so a final image often needs nothing afterwards.

Key Features

  • Unbiased progressive path tracing with a single quality control
  • Correct global illumination, caustics and soft shadow without separate stages
  • Physically based material system with layered coatings and subsurface scattering
  • Included material library covering the common architectural and product surfaces
  • Area, mesh, sun and sky, and image based environment lighting
  • Interactive rendering that updates live as the scene is edited
  • Built in post processing for exposure, tone mapping, bloom and glare
  • Render pass output for compositing control after the render
  • Distributed rendering across several machines on a network
  • Plugins for the major modelling packages included in one installer

What Changed in This Build

  • Faster convergence in enclosed interior scenes
  • Improved denoising quality at low sample counts
  • Material library expanded across architectural surfaces
  • Interactive rendering restarts less often on small scene edits

System Requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD 64-bit, high core count strongly recommended
Memory16 GB minimum, 32 GB or more for large scenes
GraphicsAny modern GPU for the viewport, rendering is primarily processor driven
Storage10 GB for install with the material library
Display1920 x 1080 or higher

Installation Notes

  • Install the host modelling package first so the plugin installer detects it and offers the matching version.
  • Learn the interactive renderer early, look development is far faster there than through repeated final renders.
  • Core count matters more than anything else for render times, this engine scales almost linearly with processor threads.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Is it processor or graphics based?

Primarily processor based, and it scales strongly with core count. Denoising uses the graphics card where available.

Which hosts are supported?

The major modelling packages used in architectural and product visualisation, with plugins in one installer.

Why so few settings?

That is the design. One quality control and progressive refinement, so you stop when the image looks finished.
