Overview

Marvelous Designer approaches digital clothing the way a tailor does. You draw flat pattern pieces in a two dimensional window, sew their edges together with sewing lines, and the simulation drapes the result onto a three dimensional figure under gravity and collision. The garment that comes out has real seams, real folds and real behaviour, because it was constructed rather than sculpted.

The two windows work as one. The pattern window holds the flat pieces with measurement, grading, internal lines, darts, pleats, folds and notches, and the three dimensional window shows the garment on the avatar simulating in real time. Change a pattern piece and the draped garment updates immediately, which turns fitting into an interactive process instead of a render and wait cycle.

Fabric is a physical property set rather than a texture. Weight, stretch in both directions, shear, bending stiffness, friction, thickness and pressure all feed the simulation, and the bundled fabric presets cover the common materials from silk to denim to leather so a garment behaves like the material it is supposed to be. Buttons, buttonholes, zippers, elastic, topstitching, trims and layered construction are all part of the pattern rather than added afterwards.

The Enterprise tier is the production configuration. Animation caching drapes the garment across a motion sequence and exports the result as a point cache for a renderer, quality settings scale from an interactive draft to a final simulation with fine particle spacing, and the export path covers the mesh formats, the cache formats and the layered texture output that the downstream applications expect. Avatars import from the common character formats so a garment is fitted to the actual character rather than to a generic figure.

Key Features

  • Flat pattern drawing with darts, pleats, folds, notches, internal lines and grading
  • Sewing line based construction with real seams and layered garment assembly
  • Real time physical simulation showing the draped garment as patterns are edited
  • Fabric defined by weight, stretch, shear, bending, friction, thickness and pressure
  • Bundled fabric preset library covering the common material families
  • Buttons, buttonholes, zippers, elastic, topstitching and trims as pattern elements
  • Avatar import from the common character formats with pose and measurement control
  • Animation caching that drapes a garment across a motion sequence
  • Quality scaling from interactive draft to fine particle final simulation
  • Export of mesh, point cache and layered texture output for downstream applications

What Changed in This Build

  • Faster simulation on garments with high particle counts
  • Improved collision handling on tight layered clothing
  • Additional fabric presets and trim assets added
  • Pattern window reorganised with better measurement and grading tools

System Requirements

ProcessorIntel or AMD 64-bit, 8 cores or more recommended for fine simulation

Installation Notes

  • Simulate at a coarse particle distance while fitting and only tighten it for the final pass, fine simulation on a draft costs time for nothing.
  • Animation caches grow very large, keep the project folder on a drive with substantial free space.
  • Import your actual character as the avatar rather than fitting to a generic figure, refitting afterwards is more work than starting correctly.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Do I need to know pattern making?

It helps considerably, but the bundled garment library gives you working patterns to modify, which is how most people learn it.

Does the garment animate?

Yes. Import a motion sequence for the avatar and the simulation drapes the garment across it, exported as a point cache.

What does the Enterprise tier add?

The production features: unrestricted simulation quality, full animation caching and the complete export path for downstream applications.
