Overview

Mastercam is the manufacturing half of the design to part pipeline, and in a large number of shops it is the software that decides how the metal actually gets cut. A model comes in, toolpaths go on, the result is simulated against the real machine and fixturing, and the output is code that the controller on the floor accepts without an operator editing it by hand.

The milling strategies cover the range from simple two and a half axis pocketing through to full five axis simultaneous work. The high speed toolpath family is the part most shops quantify a return on: constant engagement strategies that keep tool load steady, dynamic motion that lets a cutter take deep aggressive passes without chattering, and rest machining that only removes what the previous operation could not reach.

Turning, mill turn, wire electrical discharge machining and router work are all covered by their own strategy sets rather than being bolted onto the milling core. Multi axis and multi stream machines with several turrets and spindles are handled with synchronisation control, so a part that transfers between spindles is programmed as one job rather than as separate setups stitched together.

Verification is where the money is saved. Toolpaths are simulated against the stock, the holder, the fixture and the machine model, with collision detection covering the whole envelope rather than just the cutter, and material removal simulation showing the actual resulting part before anything is cut. Post processors for the common controllers are included, and the post itself is editable for shops with a machine that needs coaxing.

Installation Notes

  • Always verify against the machine model with the real holder and fixture before sending code to the floor.
  • Keep tool libraries under version control of some kind, an edited library that nobody noticed is a expensive way to learn a lesson.
  • Post processors often need local adjustment. Test on air before the first real cut on any new machine.

No, it includes modelling tools, though most shops import a solid model produced elsewhere and machine from that.

It is as good as the machine, holder and fixture models you give it. Accurate models mean accurate collision detection.
