Overview

Cinema 4D holds a particular place in the three dimensional world because it is the package motion designers reach for rather than the one technical artists are forced into. The interface is consistent, the crash rate is famously low, and the procedural toolset means a great deal of animation is set up rather than keyframed by hand. On a deadline, those three things matter more than any single feature.

Modelling covers polygon and spline workflows with the usual modifiers and generators, a volume based workflow for building shapes by boolean and remeshing rather than by pushing points, sculpting with layers for organic detail, and a node based scene approach for anything that needs to be built parametrically and adjusted after the fact. Nothing has to be committed early, which is the practical benefit.

The procedural animation toolset is the signature. Cloners and effectors take a single object and multiply it across a grid, a spline, an object surface or a radial array, then drive the resulting copies by shader, sound, field, random or user placed influence. Fields shape where an effect applies with falloffs that can be layered and animated. Add the dynamics, cloth, rope, pyro and particle simulations on top and complex motion emerges from a handful of parameters.

Rendering runs through the physically based renderer and the GPU accelerated engine bundled with the Studio tier, with a full material system, area and portal lighting, global illumination, subsurface scattering, hair, and a token based multi pass output. Character tools cover rigging, weighting, retargeting and motion blending, and the exchange formats and plugin bridges hand scenes on to the compositing and editing packages already in the pipeline.

Key Features

  • Polygon, spline, volume and sculpting workflows with a full modifier and generator set
  • Procedural cloners and effectors for building complex arrays from a single object
  • Fields system for shaping where effects apply, with layered animated falloffs
  • Rigid and soft body dynamics, cloth, rope, pyro and particle simulation
  • Character rigging with weighting, retargeting and motion blending
  • Node based material system with physically based and GPU accelerated rendering
  • Global illumination, area and portal lighting, subsurface scattering and hair
  • Multi pass and token based output for handing renders to a compositor
  • Motion tracking for placing objects into filmed footage
  • Exchange formats and plugin bridges into the common compositing and editing applications

What Changed in This Build

  • Faster viewport playback on scenes with heavy cloner counts
  • Simulation system extended with improved cloth and rope solving
  • Rendering performance improved on current generation graphics hardware
  • Scene nodes workflow expanded with additional procedural asset types

Installation Notes

  • Update your graphics driver before first launch, since the GPU renderer is the component most sensitive to an old one.
  • Cache simulations to disk before rendering rather than solving them live on every frame.
  • Keep project assets inside the project folder structure so a scene can be handed to another machine without relinking textures.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

What does the Studio tier include?

The complete feature set, including the character tools, the full simulation system, motion tracking and the bundled rendering engines.

Does it work with a compositing application?

Yes. Multi pass output and the plugin bridges are built for exactly that handoff, so a render arrives as separate layers rather than one flattened image.

Will older scene files open?

Yes. Scenes are upgraded on open, though third party plugin content requires the matching plugin to be installed to render correctly.
