Overview

Multisim is the package that a very large number of engineers first drew a circuit in, and it remains in use well beyond teaching because the simulation core underneath the friendly interface is a genuine industry standard SPICE engine. You draw a schematic with real components rather than idealised symbols, and the analysis you run afterwards reflects the behaviour of those parts rather than a textbook approximation.

Schematic capture handles hierarchical designs with sub circuits, multi sheet projects, buses, net naming, and a component database holding many thousands of parts from real manufacturers with their genuine models attached. Custom parts can be built in the component wizard from a datasheet, and third party SPICE models drop in directly for anything the database does not already carry.

The analysis set is what the Professional edition is bought for. Beyond simple transient and DC operating point runs there is AC sweep, parameter sweep, temperature sweep, Monte Carlo and worst case for tolerance analysis, noise, distortion, Fourier, pole zero, transfer function, sensitivity and trace width analysis. Results plot on a grapher with cursors and post processing so an expression can be built from several measured traces.

The virtual instrument panel is the feature that makes it feel like a bench. Oscilloscopes, function generators, multimeters, bode plotters, logic analysers, word generators, spectrum analysers and network analysers are wired into the schematic exactly as they would be onto a breadboard, with front panels that behave like the physical equipment. When the design settles, the layout path exports the netlist onward for board work and the manufacturing output the fabricator expects.

Installation Notes

  • Install the component database in full during setup. Adding libraries afterwards means rebuilding the search index.
  • Save a working copy before changing simulation tolerances, since convergence settings that fix one circuit often break another.
  • Keep custom parts in a user database rather than editing the master, otherwise an update overwrites your work.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

Does it produce board layout files?

It exports the netlist and forward annotates into the layout stage, which then produces the manufacturing output a fabricator needs.
