Overview

ZBrush does not work like other 3D applications and never has. Instead of manipulating vertices and edges, you push a brush across a surface and the surface responds, at densities running into tens of millions of polygons that would stop a conventional modeller outright. The custom engine behind that is why character artists, creature designers, jewellery makers and toy sculptors all ended up in the same application despite having almost nothing else in common.

The brush set is enormous and every brush is editable down to its falloff, alpha and stroke behaviour. Standard, clay, dam standard, move, inflate, pinch and smooth cover the bulk of sculpting, and beyond them sit the specialised tools: surface noise, trim brushes with hard flat cuts, planar brushes for mechanical forms, insert mesh brushes that stamp geometry onto a surface, and curve brushes that draw strips, tubes and chains along a path.

Base geometry comes from several directions depending on the job. ZSpheres build an armature that converts to a sculptable skin. DynaMesh reconstructs the surface at even density whenever stretching gets in the way, which lets a form be pushed anywhere without the topology fighting back. Sculptris Pro adds detail where the brush needs it. ZModeler handles conventional polygon editing when a hard surface part calls for it, and Live Boolean shows the result of combined solids interactively.

Getting the result out is a defined stage rather than an afterthought. Automatic retopology produces a clean animation ready mesh from a sculpt, UV unwrapping is handled inside the application, and the multi million polygon detail bakes down into normal and displacement maps for the destination renderer or engine. Polypainting colours the surface without a UV layout at all, and the render engine produces presentation images with materials, lighting and depth passes directly from the sculpt.

Installation Notes

  • Use a pressure sensitive tablet. Sculpting with a mouse is possible and almost nobody does it twice.
  • Subdivide progressively rather than jumping straight to the highest level. Form first, detail after.
  • Save incremental versions. Dense sculpts are heavy files and an overwritten one cannot be recovered.

Frequently Asked

Do I need a tablet?

Not strictly, but pressure sensitivity is fundamental to how the brushes behave. It is the single biggest quality difference.

Can the result be animated?

Yes, after retopology. The sculpt is baked into maps and applied to the clean animation ready mesh.

Is it a replacement for a conventional modeller?

For sculpting, yes. Most pipelines still pair it with a conventional package for rigging, layout and rendering.
