Overview

Proteus is the package that lets an electronics design go from an idea to a manufacturable board without leaving one program, and its defining trick is that the simulation runs the actual firmware. Draw the schematic, drop in a microcontroller, point it at a compiled hex file, and press play. The virtual instruments read the virtual board while your real code executes on the simulated part, which catches the class of bug that only appears when hardware and software meet.

Schematic capture handles hierarchical designs with buses, sheet references, design rule checking and a component library covering tens of thousands of parts with simulation models attached. Parts without a model can be given one, and the library editor covers symbol, footprint and model together so a custom component is defined once and used everywhere.

The simulator is genuinely mixed mode. Analogue nodes are solved with a SPICE derived engine while digital sections run event driven, and the two interface cleanly at the boundary, so an amplifier feeding a comparator into a microcontroller pin behaves the way it will on the bench. Virtual instruments include oscilloscope, logic analyser, spectrum analyser, signal generator, pattern generator, counter and protocol analysers for the common serial buses.

PCB layout takes the netlist straight from the schematic with forward and back annotation, supporting multi layer boards, controlled trace widths and clearances by net class, differential pairs, copper pour, design rule checking against manufacturing constraints, and a 3D board viewer that shows component clearances and mechanical fit. Output covers the standard manufacturing file set plus assembly drawings and a bill of materials.

Installation Notes

  • Install the full component library during setup. Adding library sections later means repeating the installer.
  • Point the firmware path at your build output folder rather than copying hex files in, so a rebuild is picked up on the next simulation run.
  • Set your net class rules before routing, not after. Changing clearances on a routed board means ripping most of it up.

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

Yes. The compiled binary executes against the simulated microcontroller and its peripherals, which is the point of the co simulation feature.
