Overview

Creo is a parametric mechanical design system, which means the model is a recipe rather than a shape. Features are added in a history, each referencing the geometry before it, driven by dimensions and relations that can be changed at any point to regenerate the whole part. Change a hole diameter defined at the top of the tree and every dependent feature, every assembly mate and every drawing view updates together.

Part modelling covers solid features, freeform surfacing, sheet metal with flat pattern development and bend tables, weldments, and a direct modelling mode for editing imported geometry that has no feature history at all. That last one matters more than it sounds, because a great deal of real work starts with a supplier file in a neutral format and no tree to modify.

Assembly work handles large structures without falling over. Constraint based mating, mechanism definition with joints and motion, interference and clearance checking, simplified representations that load only the components a task needs, exploded views for documentation, and a bill of materials that reads from the assembly structure rather than being maintained separately.

Analysis and output round out the package. Structural, thermal and modal simulation runs against the model directly with the parametric definition intact, so a design change re runs the study rather than requiring a rebuilt mesh. Detailed drawings are generated from the model with automatic view creation, dimensioning, tolerancing and annotation that update when the model does, and the bundled help centre installs locally so documentation is available without a connection.

Installation Notes

  • Use a certified graphics driver rather than the consumer one. Display corruption in professional CAD is almost always a driver mismatch.
  • Install the help centre locally during setup. Retrofitting it afterwards means rerunning the installer against the full source.
  • Set your working directory and library paths on first launch, before creating parts, so references resolve consistently later.

Before You Start

Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

Are drawings linked to the model?
