Overview

Serato DJ Pro is the performance software a very large share of working DJs actually stand behind, and the reason is that it does not fall over. The audio engine is built for a room rather than a studio, the interface is readable at arm's length under bad lighting, and the hardware integration with the major controllers, mixers and turntable interfaces is plug and play rather than a configuration exercise.

The core is four decks with a library underneath. Tracks are analysed on import for beat grid, tempo and key, cue points and loops are stored per track and travel with it, and the crates system organises a collection that runs to tens of thousands of files without the browser becoming unusable. Smart crates fill themselves from rules, and the history view records every set so a night can be reconstructed afterwards.

Performance features are where the Suite tier pays. Stem separation splits a track into vocal, melody, bass and drum parts in real time, so an acapella can be pulled out of a finished record live and dropped over another. Key detection and shift keep harmonic mixing honest. The pad modes cover hot cues, loop rolls, slicing, sampling and pitch play, and the sampler holds banks of one shots and loops triggered against the master clock.

The Suite bundles the expansions that are otherwise separate: the effects packs, the video playback and mixing module, the vinyl and CD control interface for timecode, the recording module for capturing a set at full quality, and the flip feature for recording and replaying an edit performed live. Hardware support covers the current generation of controllers along with a long list of older units that a lot of working DJs are still using.

Installation Notes

  • Analyse your whole library once before a gig rather than letting tracks analyse as you load them mid set.
  • Keep your music on an internal or fast external drive, a slow USB drive is the most common cause of a dropout on stage.
  • Install your controller drivers before first launch so the hardware is detected on the first run.

Before You Start

Read the notes above before running setup. Most of the problems people write in about are covered there, and almost all of them come down to an older version of the same software still being installed, a graphics driver that predates the release, or a security suite quarantining part of the package mid install.

There is no archive password on this or any other entry in the library. If something you downloaded elsewhere claims to come from here and asks for one, it did not come from here. Nothing on this site is behind a survey, a shortener or a countdown either.

If the entry does not match what the page describes, say so on the contact page and include the version string from the release details table. Reports naming a specific version get checked first because the checker can reproduce them straight away.

Frequently Asked

Does it need a controller?

No, it runs with a keyboard and mouse. A supported controller unlocks the hardware layout and is what most people perform on.

What does the Suite tier add?

The expansion packs: effects, video mixing, timecode vinyl and CD control, high quality recording and the live edit flip feature.

Does stem separation work live?

Yes, in real time on a machine that meets the recommended specification. Pre analysing tracks lightens the load further.
